“Cornbread and Babies” is the official blog of boomwellness.com/ and is intended to bring joy to those who truly expect to be found by it. And I hope that includes you. The blog is light, fun, and hopefully motivating, with a splash of insight and a drop or two of wisdom. Much of it revolves around my four children – ages 28 ,5, 3, 1, and one due in October, plus one brand new grandbaby. See some of you are laughing already. Oh, and there’s our ’53 Chevy truck, the center of much family fun, we call “Cornbread.”
I began my professional career as a copywriter for an ad agency, ultimately working my way to creative director. At the ripe age of 27, I started my own agency. After a tremendous 15 year run with some 30 employees, it ended less than perfectly. After taking my son, Pierce, to Pepperdine where he ultimately graduated a few years ago, it was clear I had reached a crux in my life. Knowing failure was a prerequisite for success I forged on. With an undergraduate in Journalism and an MBA, I went back to school and earned a second Masters – this time in Exercise Science. I also received a CSCS (certified strength and conditioning specialist) certification. You might say, I have a passion for wellness and nutrition. While others suggest, over the top.
My wellness resume includes six top tier fitness and nutrition certifications, years as a competitive endurance athlete, numerous marathons and triathlons, along with two ultra-events (an off-road 31 miler and being one of a four-man relay team to run 206 miles in 17 hours – I personally logged 48), a second degree black belt in Taekwondo, assistant Taekwondo instructor, rock and mountain climber (Hu’ Shun, Rainier, McKinley, Kilimanjaro), desert survival (Boulder Outdoor Survival School) and I am up at 4 a.m. 6 days a week and train for 90 minutes. This has been my routine for over 33 years, and now at 53 it’s just what I do.
Anyway back to my professional life post agency. I spent about 5 years in a business training executives and athletes and providing life coaching services to a variety of clients. Loved it. And got very close to opening a franchise gym concept exclusively for youth and teens. But, two things of which both happened in the gym, changed my plans again. One I met the love of my life. After agreeing we would never marry again nor consider children, Margarita is now my wife and mother of my three babies and presently carrying the fourth.
The second chance meeting was with Don the president of a company that needed a strategic marketing plan. Ultimately, I authored the plan and conceptualized all the creative work. We have now been at three companies together, he as president and me as chief marketing officer. The gym has been very good to me. God has been very good to me! My life is full of His love, grace and mercy. I have been called to pass it on. You might say I’m a “regenerator.” So, I’m back! And I’m back with today’s science and tomorrow’s technology for a perfect FIT. I’m back with “BOOM Wellness.” Back for you. Welcome to Cornbread and Babies.
